About AskSNP
Last updated: September 13, 2026
AskSNP is a small, independent project: a browser-based way to look at Touchstone S-parameter files without opening a script or a licensed desktop tool. This page is about the project itself — what it reads and what it can plot is on the landing page.
Why it exists
Opening an .s2p file is a routine task with no casual option. The software that does it properly — VNA applications and simulator post-processors — is excellent, but it assumes you already have it installed and licensed on the machine in front of you. The alternative is writing a scikit-rf or MATLAB snippet every time. Neither fits the case that comes up most often: someone sends you a file and you want to see the insertion loss in the next thirty seconds, possibly on a laptop that has none of your tooling on it.
So AskSNP optimizes for that one case and nothing else. It is deliberately not trying to become a simulator, a calibration suite, or a place to keep your measurements.
How it is built
Uploads are parsed server-side with scikit-rf, the open-source RF library, so the values you see are the ones your own scripts would compute. A prompt is sent to a large language model, which returns a structured plot specification rather than free text — the model chooses what to plot, but it never invents the data. A second provider stands behind the first, so one vendor having a bad afternoon does not take the tool down. The chart itself is drawn in your browser.
What it deliberately does not do
- No accounts. There is nothing to sign up for and no profile to maintain, which also means there is nothing to leak.
- No long-term storage. Uploads are auto-deleted within 12 hours, one file is kept per session, and you can remove yours at any time.
- No tracking. No third-party analytics, no cookies for measurement, and no per-visitor identifiers.
A note on accuracy
AskSNP is a visualization aid, not a replacement for your measurement or simulation toolchain. Interpreting a prompt can occasionally misread an ambiguous request — the wrong port, the wrong metric — so always sanity-check a plot against your own understanding of the data before relying on it for an engineering decision.
